Towanda Public Library Posted on February 6, 2012 by WebAdminFebruary 6, 2012

Well, folks, I have to admit: I’m not the biggest football fan.  In fact, on Sunday when I heard people talking about The Big Game, I had to think a minute before saying, “Oh yeah, was that today?”  But there is another major televised Sunday event that I look forward to with great anticipation: The Oscars.  While I’m not a huge fan of the ceremony, I do love movies, and I’m always excited to see what will get recognized.

Academy Award Nominee: The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

Towanda Public Library Posted on January 30, 2012 by WebAdminJanuary 30, 2012

For all library and book lovers, here’s a movie for you to check out: The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore (2011). This is a short film, about 15 minutes long, and you can watch it online.  I don’t usually see too many of the shorts that get nominated for the Oscars but I can tell you that my vote is for this one this year!

From Moonbot Studios:

Inspired, in equal measures, by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz, and a love for books, “Morris Lessmore” is a story of people who devote their lives to books and books who return the favor. Morris Lessmore is a poignant, humorous allegory about the curative powers of story. Using a variety of techniques (miniatures, computer animation, 2D animation) award winning author/ illustrator William Joyce and Co-director Brandon Oldenburg present a new narrative experience that harkens back to silent films and M-G-M Technicolor musicals. “Morris Lessmore” is old fashioned and cutting edge at the same time.

“The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” is one of five animated short films that will be considered for outstanding film achievements of 2011 in the 84th Academy Awards ®.

Film Awards Won by “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore”
To date, “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” film has drummed up fans all over the world taking home the following awards:
· Cinequest Film Fest: Best Animated Short
· Palm Springs International ShortFest: Audience Favorite Award
· SIGGRAPH: Best in Show

The 2012 Kansas Reads…Our Boys: A Perfect Season with the Smith Center Redmen by Joe Drape kicks off on Friday, January 27. The State Library and the Kansas Center for the Book encourages libraries and schools across the state to participate in this dynamic one-book/one-state project.

Kansas Reads was created to bring communities together through reading. In 2012, the statewide planning committee chose the first-ever theme for the book discussion project—community! Joe Drape’s spirited story spotlights one Kansas town that came together around a determined high school football team and their inspiring coach.

Events for Kansas Reads…Our Boys are planned at many libraries and school around the state. To see how you can join this reading and discussion project, visit the website at http://www.kcfb.info/ourboys/index.html.
